john corigliano symphony 1
This CD of John Corigliano's Symphony No. This nightmarish movement is by far the best of the symphony and while no self-standing masterpiece - the material itself isn't particularly distinguished, but it is effectively used - it deserves to be heard. It is based on a piano piece Corigliano wrote for one of the friends who died, but can be appreciated completely independently of that. Symphony No 1 swings violently between passages of rage, serenity, helplessness and nostalgia, as it weaves a musical AIDS quilt in remembrance of three particular musician friends … 1, is a personal reaction to the loss of friends and family to the AIDS epidemic, during a time, a decade or two ago, when AIDS was a worldwide headline and crisis (It still is today, really). His musical gestures are often huge, dramatic, dynamic; yet underneath will be the subtlest nuance = a harmonic twist, a melodic contour - which forms deeply and sometimes painfully touching music.

John Corigliano is unquestionably one of the great music voices of our time, speaking from heart to heart without bypassing the brain. The image of the AIDS quilt on the cover of the CD brings back many of the feelings the nation had at that time.
