The enslaved people that remained under the Washington’s control were called “dower slaves,” and after Martha’s passing, they remained enslaved, and were split up among the Custis grandchildren and relatives. Martha Washington did not enjoy her time (1789-1797) as First Lady (the term was not then used) though she played her role as hostess with dignity. She was a first generation American on her father’s side and the oldest child of Frances Jones Dandridge and John Dandridge, a well-to-do planter and the clerk of New Kent County.
